I was contacted several weeks ago by the wonderful Bill Bastas with Bastas Photography to model for his new series called "At Home Hollywood Series". Of course how could I turn him down. As we talked he shared with me his vision to create unique bridal shoots based off the "Old Hollywood Glam" styling. I think that is an awesome idea and so very unique. So the day of the shoot, I did my own makeup & the shoot took only a little over an hour. Due to the lights that are used to get this effect, it didn't really matter where we set up. We chose the den at The Inn yet as you will see below you wouldn't know it. Bill was witty, comforting, encouraging and helpful with how to best pose for the right angles. When I saw the pictures I was blown away. Here are a few below from our shoot that day.

So most of the time I run around in yoga pants, a tank top, my hair a mess & glasses working at The Inn. I'm just like everyone of you. If you have never stepped out of your comfort zone and had your pictures taken by a pro...not the family pictures but just you....I highly encourage you to do it. You will be amazed at how their eye & their gifting with a camera will show you things about yourself you never see when looking in the mirror.

May 15, 2010...Delia Joy & Salem's Southern Style Wedding at The Inn

Delia is such a sweetheart. When I emailed her a couple of months ago saying I really wanted some pictures of her beautifully Southern styled wedding, she mailed me a zip drive with tons of photos. There are so many gorgeous shots taken by the talented Mel Ferro Cole with i heart photography that I have had trouble chosing which ones to put on the blog. That is always a good problem to have though. Some of the shots look like they are right out of the deep south. I LOVE that!!!! Here are some of my overall favorites.

I was so excited to hear right before Christmas that The Inn at Wild Rose Hall had been named one of The Knots 2011 best of weddings winner. I feel so thankful for all my wonderful clients who took time out of their busy days to give some amazing feedback. My clients are the reason why I do what I do and for that I feel extremely blessed. The last 2 1/2 years I have had some awesome people come through the doors at The Inn..some have even remained my friends and I love that. As I start 2011, I am looking forward to the many new people I get to meet & know through the planning process plus I can't wait to see how they make The Inn uniquely them for their special day.

Choose An Outdoor Venue for a December Wedding or Not

I say why not!!! I know that sounds like a crazy idea since we are in Central Texas which means it could be 70 degrees one day and 40 degrees the next. But just because it is cold though doesn't mean you have to forgo the beauty of an outdoor venue. One advantage is the cost of the venue rental fee will definitely be cheaper allowing you more flexibility with your budget. You may have to rent heaters to help give warm pockets but just think about how wonderfully romantic a winter wedding can be. You could provide your guest an assortment of quilts to cover up if they get too cold. It's the perfect opportunity to serve some hot apple cider and hot chocolate, spiked or not. It can be a fabulously cozy affair.

Okay so now you are probably wondering...But won't everything be brown and lifeless in December? NOT AT ALL!!! When I was at The Inn yesterday watering, I decided to take some pictures to show just what outdoors in C. Texas looks like one week before Christmas after a few freezes. It is still wonderfully beautiful.

And in case you are also wondering, there is no sprinkler system & no maintenance crew. We have had no real measurable rain since September. What you see is due to the right plants in the right place, micro climates & one woman's love for her venue and what it can provide others.

Things to Look at When Venue Shopping

Something I hear all the time when giving tours is how hard it is to do an apples to apples comparison when shopping for a venue. Each venue is really so very unique and while that is a good thing when it comes to pricing it causes a little more hassle for the shopper. I have also heard horror stories of clients booking a venue for their low facility rental price only to be "nickeled & dimed" to death for all the little things that were not included in the base price. This is why, when shopping for venues it is very important to have a list of everything that is included for the price you are being quoted. So I have done a little research in showing the value of what is included when you rent The Inn at Wild Rose Hall for your special day.

For a guest count of 150 people, here is what The Inn provides for your use:

• 150 white wooden chairs
• 15-60” round tables
• 15 economy floor length linens (45 color options thanks to Premier Party Central)
• 2- 6’ tables for head table
• 2 black head table linens
• 2- 6’ tables for buffet
• 2 black buffet table linens
• 30”x60” cake table
• 5’ antique bar
• 1-6’ table for use at bar area
• 1 black table linen for bar area table
• Approx. 1940 sq. ft. outdoor covered space
• Wrought iron Gazebo for the alter

Plus we:
• set up chairs at the ceremony site
• set up tables for the reception
• place our linens on the tables

Now I am sure you are asking, how much will this cost me on top of the venue rental fee? Well, the answer is simple. If you book your wedding at The Inn at Wild Rose Hall then it cost you

NOTHING EXTRA.

If you book at some of the other local venues and you have to rent all the above mentioned items, then you could have to pay an extra $3000 + on top of the venue rental fee. Here is how that breaks down:

To rent & set up 150 chairs, 20 tables, 20 tablecloths and a unique bar: up to $1200+ delivery

Rental of an Iron Gazebo: $350+ delivery

And if it rains and you have to rent a tent to cover @ 1940 sq ft: $1400+ delivery & set up fees

So booking with The Inn at Wild Rose Hall could save you thousands of dollars that you might not have realized if you are only looking at base venue rental prices. While price shouldn't really be the only thing that determines where you choose to exchange your vows, in this economic climate it does have to play a large part.

We went ahead and set the ceremony in both locations due to the large chance of rain. However, the evening turned out beautiful so the ceremony went off in the lawn and these chairs got moved to the tables before the event got going.

Ceremony musicians...always a nice touch especially when they are friends of the couple and sing an original score.

Commitment Ceremony Reflection

This past weekend was The Inn's first commitment ceremony and I can honestly say I am sad that it has come and gone. I know that many people have an issue with this concept and if I am being totally open and honest I did too just a few short years ago. However I have done much soul searching over the last year and a half and have come to the realization that what this world doesn't have enough of is LOVE based on being true to your heart. What I saw this weekend was an overwhelming amount of love from family & friends to the couple. There were same sex & straight couples mingling together for a common goal of celebrating the love M&M share. My heart has been deeply touched by these amazing women and their family & friends. They included me in and allowed me a glimpse into a celebration that really looked no different than any other celebration. A couple deeply in love, family by their side, amazing friends....what everyone who is totally in tune with their heart wants!!! So I am blessed to walk away from this past weekend with a greater desire to celebrate LOVE NO MATTER THE PACKAGE!!!!

New Twitter Sign

Here is the latest addition to our sign post that welcomes guest into The Inn. Another wonderful use for the old fencing I aquired several months back. A couple of paint pens, a sharpie and the "how can I make this unique?" attituded and voila.

As you can probably guess more signs will follow. Right now there is the welcome sign to The Inn along with parking & handicap/vendor drop off directional.

New Drink/Appetizer/Place Card/Candy Station

Okay so it has been complete for about 6 weeks but I had only documented the process on FB and not blogged about it yet. Honestly, building is in my blood and The Inn gives me an outlet however I am pretty sure this can be accomplished by anyone with just a few key tools and materials.

I had the idea months ago that I really needed to build a table for the outside of the fireplace wall. It was such a massive element that folding tables just did not please the designer in me. It wasn't until I was given a bunch of old fencing that it all came together. Here are the stages:

The beginning...2 4x4 post, some 2x4 pt pine, 4 porch posts & a 4x8 sheet exterior grade plywood

The start of adding the old fencing

Top and trim complete with recycled fencing

A light coat of the same rich brown that the trim on the house was painted a few weeks prior.

This is where the fun begins. I added in a random way light blue from the ceiling and green from the wall at the end of the veranda. (sorry it's sideways...it refuses to rotate :( )

Now a almost dry brush effect with the cream color from the inside of The Inn.

Now was time for the orbital sander to give it the unique aged look as if the fencing had survived many paintings.

Here it is after the sanding and post poly stain to further enhance the aged effect along with protection (sorry it's sideways...it refuses to rotate :( )

A little sisal rope detail to add to the rustic nature of the piece.

All Finished and ready to be used!!!

It has already been a fabulous addition to several weddings and I can't wait to post pro pictures as it gets many years of use. So don't be afraid to reuse & recycle...you never know what gem you could create.

Websites...to much info or not enough

There seems to be two different sides to website content. One is you provide very little info forcing your proposed client to call you for more information so that you have the chance to hard pressure sell them. The second is to provide them with almost all the information they need just shy of coming out to see the place. This allows them to assess their options in the comfort of their own home. I tend to fall on the later of the two choices as for me I am not only NOT a high pressure salesperson but I HATE being high pressure sold anything. This is why I am in the works on a brand new website for The Inn at Wild Rose Hall. I plan to put as much information on it as I can possibly contain on it. I want people to know all about it before they ever step foot onto the grounds. I am sure there are plenty of people who would tell me that it isn't a smart move but I am following my heart on this one. The Inn is an expression of my heart...yes it is a business but it does not mean I have to go against the core of what makes me ME. I want my clients to know me and so here is the content of the "About the Owner" page I am putting on the new website.

Hi...My name is Morgan Jackson and I am the proud owner of The Inn at Wild Rose Hall. My business is unique in the sense that I am very much a hands on owner. The staff consist of only me which at times has its cons but for the most part I wouldn't have it any other way as it allows me the opportunity to be fully involved. I am blessed that during event times my kids often come and help me set up so that my clients do not have to worry about that detail before their event.

A Little About Me:
I am a native Texan and proud of it-at least now that I am older =). Born in Ft. Worth in 1968, grew up in Midland until we moved to Austin in 1981. Austin has changed a ton in the past 30 years. It is such a unique city full of friendly creative people. Hence the need for my style of unique event venue. I have been in the local wedding industry since 2006. Before purchasing the business from Wild Rose Hall's previous owners, I owned Simply Abundant Blooms, a floral design company. Creating is in my blood. I have been in love with architecture since I was a little girl. As I grew up, my love of garden & interior design blossomed. I love to use my hands to create so during non event times you are likely to find me digging in the dirt, wielding my compound miter saw to build something, painting, trimming trees, repurposing furniture…My desire is to create an atmosphere at The Inn at Wild Rose Hall, both inside and in the gardens, that not only speak of comfort & charm but also what I believe is truly Texan, warm and inviting.

The Story Behind Why I Purchase Wild Rose Hall:
Sometimes life really is full of amazing twists & turns. In late 2003-early 2004, a gorgeous piece of property I would pass by almost every day went up for sale. I pulled the flyer and went on the internet to research it. I was intrigued and enamored at how beautiful and perfect it was. See I had for many years dreamed of having a B&B and a place for gatherings (event venue). I could see as I looked at those realtor pictures just how fabulous it could be. I was so excited I even had a name picked out, Wild Rose Inn. My husband and I tried to figure out a way to swing the numbers and at the time there was just no way. I was heartbroken but not nearly as heartbroken as I would experience several months later. The “for sale” sign came down and as I would drive by I would just wonder about the “what if’s” however I also knew it hadn’t been feasible. Imagine my surprise when a new sign went up by the road that read “Wild Rose Hall”. I drove home and immediately searched for it on the internet. There I found the page for Austin’s newest event center. I was devastated to say the least. I could not understand how I had a vision for something that someone else was going to experience and on top of that the massive similarities in the name I would have named it and the name it now had. Honestly, it felt like a cruel joke. Much of the next year as I would pass by I would cry because I still just couldn’t understand. Well as they say, timing is everything. In January of 2008, I was at a wedding industry get together and ran into the owner of WRH. He had known the story of my love affair with the property because several month prior I had talk to he and his wife about possibly becoming their preferred florist. He informed me that his wife really wanted to go back to teaching and they wanted to sell the business. I couldn’t believe it. After I left the meeting I called my husband with the news. I was excited beyond words. Could it actually happen this time? Over the next several months, we came in and started working side by side to learn the ropes in a hands on training way. By April, we were working as the property managers as all the details were hammered out. July 1, 2008 we signed the purchase papers for Wild Rose Hall and immediately renamed it The Inn at Wild Rose Hall. An homage to their name plus my original desired name. My original hope had been that it would be a family business but due to the stresses of life over the last couple of years it hasn’t really worked out that way. I have taken to heart this quote by Mary Engelbreit “If you don't like something change it; if you can't change it, change the way you think about it”. And so The Inn really is my creative baby and I will continue to nurture it, create for it and embellish the beautiful piece of property that I fell in love with all those years ago.

My Philosophy:
The Inn at Wild Rose Hall is not just a business but a lifestyle and a piece of my heart. For me it is all about being relational, honest & real. I want to know you and I want you to know me so I always encourage my clients to connect up via FB. This way it isn’t a cold sterile formal process but a process that has grace, understanding & heart.

In a discussion with a friend this past Christmas, he gave me some very wise and insightful words that have been playing in my head & heart every since. He said "LOVE DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THE PACKAGE". As I have opened my eyes to the world around me, I am struck with how very true this statement is. This October, The Inn will host it's first commitment ceremony for M&M (yes, this is their initials and they are having the candy as part of the festivities :) ). These two lovely woman are so cute & in love. They are excited about having their friends and family share the day with them & I am looking forward to being a part of that day too. When talking to them one day, they informed me at how hard it was to actually find venues who were "commitment friendly". This is why I have made some slight adjustments to the website in order to hopefully let people know that The Inn at Wild Rose Hall is about celebrating LOVE no matter what the package.

Liz & Jonny's Wedding on February 27, 2010

Here are a few quick photos I took last Saturday. Liz and Jonny came down from California to get married at The Inn. In the week leading up to their special day they got the full spectrum of Central Texas weather. In a span of 7 days, it went from 80 to ice/snow to a perfect day for an outdoor garden wedding. I so enjoyed being a part of Liz and Jonny's special day and getting to meet all of their wonderful family and friends. I look forward to seeing the professional photos in a few weeks. It sounds like they had fun scouting out some unique photos locations all over the property.

September 12, 2009....Price-Leaman Wedding at The Inn at Wild Rose Hall

I have had the photo CD's of Dana & Max's wedding for quite sometime but I had not had the time to go through them until this past weekend. All I can say is WOW!!! I really loved some of the shots Lisa Shepard with Aimage captured of not only Max, Dana and their family and friends but also The Inn. Max and Dana's special day started out rainy. Due to their 240 guest count, it called for some quick action on the part of Emily with Events By Emily and the staff at The Inn. A tent was erected in the lawn and the ceremony was set on our large covered veranda. After the ceremony, Emily's wonderful staff pitched in to help The Inn staff turn around the veranda from ceremony site to reception site in under 15 minutes. Whew!!!! Just on cue for the reception, the rain passed and the event guests enjoyed the fabulous lawn as they mingled, laughed and shared in Max & Dana's glorious day at The Inn at Wild Rose Hall. Here are a few shots...more coming to the website soon.

A Piece of Texas History

When a music lover hears Austin, Texas, I would be willing to bet one of the first musicians to enter their minds would be the great Stevie Ray Vaughn & his band Double Trouble. Their music is synonymous with good ol' Texas blues. What many people don't know is Stevie Ray's bass player, Tommy Shannon, once called the sprawling ranch rambler that is The Inn at Wild Rose Hall home. He lived there for many years until the late nights of traveling back home after gigs became too much. After hearing several stories from people who have been out to parties at Tommy's house, I think it is safe to assume that Stevie Ray himself was I'm sure a frequent guest. The room that is now set up as the "hang out room" was once Tommy's music room. As I go in that room sometimes I wonder what creativity must have flowed effortlessly in there as they gathered and played their hearts out. The first three pictures where taken last July. This barren hillside has been a thorn in our side aesthetically since we became owners. This is where my love of landscape design gets utilized.

This is off the back porch.

This shot is taken off the veranda towards the pond.
This is looking out towards the ceremony site.

So here is the landscaping work in progress. We have created two sets of rustic stairs with a terraced flower bed in the middle (still in progress here).

This is the way most brides walk out towards the ceremony site. We wanted to make the stairs nice and wide for the times when brides are walked down the aisle by both parents.

No more climbing the bare hill. :)

Here is a view of the terraced patio area we are creating. The patio off the deck (where the bar is) will consist of pavers and grass that will taper off into the lawn area. We are planning on another flower bed in the very sunny spot right next to the pond walkway. It is the area that doesn't have green.

Shot of the gazing globe. This bed includes Mutabilis antique rose, columbine, bronze fennel, yarrow, nicotiana, penstemon, thyme, fleabane, lambs ear, hostas, mock orange and sweet olive.

The upper small patio will consist of pavers and river stones.

Now that all the painting is done, each room is ready for wall decor and accessories so note that they are not finished yet. I just wanted to get pictures up of the new colors. Everyone who has come through seems to really like the homeyness.

Here are some pictures of what used to be bedroom #1. We are still playing with the name for this room however we are leaning towards the Agave Room. The reason behind it is there is a very large agave plant right outside the big picture window in this room. The blue on the walls and in the curtains along with the sage green in the bedding plays wonderfully with the colors of the agave.

Here are pictures of what used to be bedroom #3. The feeling of this room will be an homage to the house's original use as a ranch house where horses roamed the property around. It will be part Texas Ranch-part Love of Horses. The tentative name for this room is the Mustang Room. The color doesn't come across very well in the pictures but it is a warm sunset color.

Here are pictures of what used to be room #4. The name for this room is also still under some discussion. It is painted a soft yellow and will be decorated with a more vintage flair. The bathroom in between this room and the sunset colored room has been painted a cream color to help brighten it up. We found a fun picture that has a collage of all the Texas wildflowers that we hung in there. It is a fitting choice since the shower surround is galvanized tin. One of my favorite features in the house.

I just love this color of blue. It is called Peace Blue by Valspar. What a perfect name for the color in the grooms dressing area. :)

We also added in a sofa so that the groomsmen/guests have a place to sit.

It's 95% there... Now it's time for a trip to Trade Days!

Last Week's Painting Progress

So last week was spent painting the hall, the bathroom off the hall and the groom's room. Both the hall and bathroom needed painting due to the amount of wear and tear they had gotten over the last year. I decided to chose a creamier color for the walls and picked the Ralph Lauren color, Parchment. I just love this color because of its light and airy feel. For the wainscoting & trim, I decided to go with another Ralph Lauren color, Desert Boot. I know originally this wood was probably a rough cedar in a natural stain but since it had already been painted previously I had no choice but to paint it again. I did however decide on a darker brown to tie in with the beams in the great room. A nice plus is the vintage 1970 floor tile blends much better with the new color palette. To me it feels like an English countryside lodge.

Yesterday, I installed a dark wood bamboo shade on the window and hung a mirror over the sink. Once it is fully finished, I will post more pictures.

This past Wednesday, I spent much of the afternoon at The Inn. I went to do laundry and while there spent time just wandering around envisioning the future look. I decided before I left home to go ahead and take over some of the decor items I have purchased over the years. It was incredible to me as I laid linens on beds along with the paint swatches....I found myself completely overwhelmed with emotion. For years we have talked about owning a place like this never knowing how it would happen. At times I would even buy things for "our future B&B". I felt crazy doing it but somehow deep in my heart I knew it would happen even if my mind tried to persuade me otherwise. So as I used the gift of interior design to lay out these items, I was extremely blessed to see how it is all going to come together. I can't wait.... :)! Over the next several weeks, I will post about the updates as they progress.

Simple Stunning Weddings Book

One of the newest additions to my ever growing wedding book library is Simple Stunning Weddings by Karen Bussen. I just love the ideas in this book. I was drawn to the chapter entitled Country Inn. As I was reading through it, a couple of things really stood out to me.

It is like she read my vision for the future of The Inn at Wild Rose Hall. This statement projects exactly what we want our clients to feel when they enter. We want it to feel like your home away from home.

One suggestion she gives is a fabulous idea and one we can definitely accommodate.

Time to Play Catch Up....

The last few months have been crazy busy both at The Inn and at Simply Abundant Blooms. I have quite a few things I have been wanting to post but have been short on time. This last weekend was our last wedding for the year so hopefully I will have a little more time to devote to the blog. :)

For the next several months, we will start the process of updating the interior. First order of business is to apply a fresh coat of paint to most of the bedrooms, two of the bathrooms, the hall and the kitchen. With the overall wear and tear, it is definitely needed.

New Chairs.....FINALLY!!!!

YEA...New Chairs! We knew early on that we wanted to get new chairs once we owned the venue. The brown chairs were purchased used several years ago from a local rental company clearing out old stock. They have definitely seen better days. It seemed like ever event we worked a couple of chairs were lost due to breakage. At the end of July, we bit the bullet and ordered 150 new white wooden chairs. So why do I say "FINALLY"? Well, it has been quite an ordeal to get these chairs here. The chairs were scheduled to be here August 5. When they didn't show, we called and emailed to no avail. For the next several weeks, each time we called the company we either got the run around or they didn't answer. We were finally at our breaking point and about to call off the order when they showed up 6 weeks late. I guess it is better late than never! :)

Our Vow Renewal

For years Glenn and I have wanted to renew our vows. We eloped 18 years ago because I though I didn't want or desire all the hoopla that comes with a wedding. It probably wasn't a year later when I realized I really did want that. We didn't have any pictures of that special day. For years we talked about where it would be or what it would look like never really finding the right time to do it. At the first of 2009, we decided this would be the years we would finally just do it. We planned to have it in our backyard with family and friends. Within a month of deciding, we found out about Wild Rose Hall being for sale. Once we agreed to by it, it made perfect sense to have it there. How better to start a new chapter in our lives as husband and wife than to renew our vows in front of family and friends at our venue? It was truly a blessing of fullfilling a long held desire in such a special and meaningful way. Here is a slideshow from Jaime Lynne.

Wild Rose Hall Has New Owners

Wow! You just never know what kind of twist life can bring. Around 4 years ago, I had a vision for a house that was for sale 10 minutes from where I lived. I just felt it would be a fabulous B&B along with a place to hold events. I even had a name picked out, Wild Rose Inn. Unfortunately we could not afford the purchase and the house was sold. Much to my devastation, the sign went up shortly after for Wild Rose Hall. I rushed home to search the Internet and found it was a wedding venue. I must have cried for at least a year every time I passed. I could not understand how God had given me a vision but it was for someone else to live. Now I know it was just not the right time for us. Funny how hind sight is always 20/20! It has been 4 years and in that time I have started my own floral design company, Simply Abundant Blooms, and received lots of valuable hands on wedding & events experience. Now is finally the time and as of July 1st, Glenn and I are the proud owners of The Inn at Wild Rose Hall. We felt we had to give an homage to that vision I had so long ago. We are definitely excited to see what the future holds with our new baby! :)

Great Room Redesign In Progress

The view out the front doors shows the changes both inside and out. The huge zinc planters outside are potted with climbing trumpet vine and ornamental sweet potato vine. Stretch across the two planters is the top of the old iron arbor. Before, it was too low on the sides for people to walk under without hitting their heads. Now it has been re purposed into a more welcoming entrance so you don't have to worry about your guest bumping their head. :) Here are a couple of pictures of the new color palette for the great room that brings the outside in. The huge stone fireplace now pops against the light green wall color. A lot of the wood work has been brought back to a bark brown in order to tie in with the ceiling's massive beams.
